Choosing your first grinder
12Minutes

The grinder is the single most important piece in a home setup. Even the best beans and the most expensive machine cannot make up for an uneven grind — and that is the one thing you cannot fix in the moment.
Hand-cranked or electric?
Hand grinders like the 1Zpresso X-Ultra or ZP6 deliver pro-grade quality under €250, but they cost you time — about a minute per dose.
Electrics like the Fellow Ode Gen 2 or Baratza Encore ESP start around €350 and go up. They are convenient, but at the same price point you usually give up some grind quality.
What to look at
- Burrs:Conical for filter methods; flat if you ever plan to pull espresso.
- Range:The grinder should cover everything from V60 to French press without compromise.
- Adjustment:Stepped or stepless — what matters is that it is consistent.
- Body material — aluminium is fine, stainless steel is for life.
Your grinder will make more difference to your coffee than any other piece of equipment you own.
